Rebuilding Afghanistan ...... one life at a time
Afghanistan has endured twenty years of war, which
has destroyed the economy and infrastructure of
the nation. In recent years, over 90% of the country
has suffered under the leadership of the Taliban, a
strict Islamic regime which prohibited many women
from working outside the home and from receiving
formal education.
Afghanistan has a large population of dependent
widows and orphans along with an entire
generation that has received virtually no education.
SERVE Afghanistan
There is little work available and traditional agricultural systems have been severely disrupted by the
constant movement of refugees, the estimated 10 million landmines indiscriminately scattered
across the country, and one of the worst droughts in recent history.
In the past, there has been little for refugees in Pakistan and other nations to return home to but
poverty, insecurity, disease and an average life span of only 43 years. Although recent events have
witnessed the collapse of the Taliban regime and a new and renewed hope of peace and stability in
the country, there are still many obstacles to overcome along the road to reconstruction.
