Language Study
A high priority, with new people eligible to
receive up to 4 months' of full time language
study. All SERVE expatriates are allowed up to
4 hours a week study during work time (usually
in Pushtu or Dari, the majority languages), to
encourage involvement with the local people
and knowledge of the culture.
Team Life in Jalalabad
Life in Jalalabad for women and girls has
improved since the fall of the Taliban. The
women have more freedom to be employed
outside the home and the girls are able to
attend school. "Life in Jalalabad can be a real
challenge. There are the constraints of hot
summers, unpredictable electricity and the
male dominated culture, but being able to help
disabled Afghan people makes it all
worthwhile", a quote from one of our single
ladies in Jalalabad. The team currently
consists of singles. We work hard at
maintaining unity, having good social and work
relationships. There are not a lot of choices of
"places to go" but the quality of team
interpersonal relationships is good.
SERVE Afghanistan
team life
You are living in a very big city when coming to Kabul! There has been much destruction as a result
of the many years of warring but with the new government there is a renewed sense of hope among
the people, and a desire to rebuild their city and country. The team here is made up of singles and
families (with lots of children!), so quite a variety. We also work at having good social and work
relationships among team members and seek to develop good relationships with our fellow
agencies. There are a variety of restaurants to try out!
