Omar is a 14-year-old hearing impaired. He lives in Behsood district of Nangarhar. His father is a daily wage labourer. He lives with his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
From early childhood, he faced significant challenges due to his hearing disability. His inability to hear or speak like other children, limited his ability to develop his intellectual & social skills, this also prevented him from attending school. This isolation made him feel lonely and discouraged, and his family struggled to find learning opportunities suitable for his needs.
With the support of Serve Afghanistan, a special education class for hearing impaired children was established in his area. He enrolled in this class and studied up to Grade 3 in a safe and supportive environment. For the first time, he learned alongside children with similar challenges and was taught by a trained teacher using Afghan Sign Language (AFSL). This experience helped him build confidence and develop foundational learning skills.
Later, he enrolled in an Inclusive Education school setting, which is a government run school. He is currently studying in Grade 5 alongside non-disabled students. Although learning in an inclusive environment is sometimes challenging, he remains motivated and committed to continuing his education.
