Surviving the flood – Story of a man affected by flood

October 19, 2024 -

In the quiet village of Shaikhjalal, nestled in Baghlan Province, Afghanistan, Mr. Mohd. Ali (name changed) once led a life filled with challenges, compounded by his disability—a limitation from birth that affected his ability to earn a living. Despite these hardships, he persevered, finding small ways to support his family and maintain a modest existence.

However, everything changed one fateful day when a devastating flood swept through Shaikhjalal. The floodwaters mercilessly engulfed homes, uprooted lives, and tragically claimed the life of one of Mr. Mohd. Ali's family members. His own home, a place of solace and security, was reduced to ruins, leaving him and his surviving loved ones homeless and destitute.

"I never imagined such destruction," Mr. Mohd. Ali recalled; his voice tinged with sorrow. "Losing my home and a family member—it's beyond words."

Amidst the rubble and despair, a glimmer of hope emerged. Serve Afghanistan swiftly responded to the crisis. Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, they provided Mr. Mohd. Ali with 11,000 AFN as financial aid—a lifeline amidst the chaos.

"The aid from Serve Afghanistan was like a beacon in the darkness," Mr. Mohd. Ali shared. His gratitude is palpable. "It helped us to buy food, water, and essential supplies to survive in our temporary shelter."

While the aid was a crucial first step, Mr. Mohd. Ali acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead. Living with a disability in a makeshift tent posed ongoing difficulties, yet he remained resilient, focusing on rebuilding not just his home but his life.

"We need more support to rebuild," he remarked, eyes reflecting determination. "A permanent home that accommodates my disability and livelihood opportunities to sustain my family—that's what we aspire to."

Looking ahead, Mr. Mohd. Ali's hopes extended beyond personal recovery. He envisioned a revitalized community in Shaikhjalal, where neighbours come together to heal and rebuild stronger than before.

As the sun set over the village, casting a golden hue over the tents that now dotted the landscape, Mr. Mohd. Ali clung to hope. With the support of organizations like Serve Afghanistan and the resilience of his community, he believed in a future where stability, security, and solidarity prevail once more. In the aftermath of tragedy, amidst the echoes of loss, Mr. Mohd. Ali's story became not just one of survival, but of resilience and hope—a testament to the human spirit's ability to endure and rise above adversity.
