Disaster Response & Risk Reduction

The poor and vulnerable families of Afghanistan have been supported since 2020 under the Disaster Management Programme. Many of them have suffered due to conflict and change in the regime leading to their displacement either internally or from the neighbouring country, some have suffered due to the economic crisis that has engulfed the country since 2021 and others due to natural disaster like earthquake and flash floods.

In 2020, to support the people who had lost their source of income due to the COVID-19, 2800 families were provided emergency relief by providing them with food and hygiene which could last for them for a month as per Sphere Standards. They were also provided with Psychological First Aid.

In 2021, 1,385 Internally Displaced Families were provided in-kind emergency relief of food and hygiene materials in Nangarhar and Laghman Provinces.

In 2022, 9 Relief programmes were conducted in different locations to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and vulnerable families due to economic crisis. 9,135 families were provided food package which consisted of 25 kg of rice, 50 kg of wheat, 5 litres of cooking oil, 7kg of red beans and 2kg of salt. WASH kit consisted of 4 pieces of hand washing soap, 5 pieces of laundry soap, 2 tubes of toothpaste, 8 toothbrushes and 8 washable face masks. Two blankets were distributed to each beneficiary household.

An Earthquake Relief programme was conducted in Paktika for 500 families who were provided with a cash of 14,000 Afghani per family as per the guideline from the Minimum Expenditure Basket under Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance set by Afghanistan Cash and Voucher working group (CVWG).

In 2023, an Earthquake relief was provided to 465 families in Herat Province. They were supported with a cash of 12,500 Afghani as per the guideline from the Minimum Expenditure Basket under Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance set by Afghanistan Cash and Voucher working group (CVWG).

In addition, 2,140 poor and vulnerable families in Kandahar, Kabul, Nangarhar and Laghman were supported with food and hygiene kits which is enough for them for one month as per Sphere Standards. They were given Winterized item of 2 blankets to each family.

In 2024, Serve supported 630 families in Baghlan Province who were severely affected by the flood. Each target family was provided cash assistance of 11,000 Afghani as per the guideline from the Minimum Expenditure Basket under Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (April 2024) set by Afghanistan Cash and Voucher working group (CVWG).

Relief assistance was also provided to the Forced Returnees from Pakistan. 210 families were supported with food and hygiene materials which will last them for two months as Sphere standards. Each family were also given 2 Single bed blankets and cash assistance of 700 Afghani

In 2025, Relief assistance was provided to Forced Returnees from Pakistan in the month of June. Multipurpose cash assistance of 11,000 Afghani was provided to 270 families in Nangarhar and 125 families in Laghman.
